Nettie's Block | February

Thanks for giving us such a fun challenge this month, Nettie! Your inspiration photo was priceless. I took the mash-up of the rainbow colors surrounded by grey from that photo, and wound up with this block.

I added in a few prints, all from the new oliver + s Modern Workshop line. The focus on primary colors and subtle modern prints really made it a good match with your selections. I tried to mirror the rainbow color placement on the diagonal -- from the top left (red) to the bottom right (purple). And I really wanted big fat dark grey solid borders around most of the block to set the colored patch off from surrounding blocks.

I hope that, within the larger quilt top, this little patch of wonky squares will be a fun pop of color. Can't wait to see the finished quilt!

Anything goes. I had hoped to get the packages in the mail today or tomorrow, but it's supposed to be -2* tomorrow. I doubt I'll go anywhere.

What size quilt block do you want your bee partners to make? 12.5 inches

Can your partners use any of her own stash fabric to use in your quilt block? If so, are there any limitations? yes, use what you'd like.

Is there a specific color of thread (white/off white) you want your partners to sew with? any color is fine.

Does your partners have to use at least a little bit of every fabric you send or can your partners decide? no

Do you have a general theme or is it up to your partners to decide? Are there any specific themes that you do NOT want in your quilt block? Likes/dislikes?. use the image above as inspiration, wonky or not. Anything is fine.

Will you allow any embellishments on the quilt block (i.e. embroidery, raised items such as yo-yos or fabric origami)? no thanks.

If your partners are super motivated and are able to make two blocks out of the fabric you send, would you accept more than one block from your partners? sure.

Do you want your partners to return any leftover larger size scraps to you when they return the completed blocks or can they keep them for their own scrap stash? NO! please keep any scraps, or toss them. I don't want them back.

So it's about time that I catch up here ... not in making the blocks, because I've managed not to fall behind ... but getting over here to blog about the blocks in a timely manner seems to have fallen to the wayside. Sorry about that! The bright side is that I can write a post with not one but THREE pictures of blocks for my talented group members!

Here are two July blocks for Ryan, who sent out a selection of red & aqua fabrics and asked for asterisk blocks:

I can't believe how time flies. It's already time for me to send out my fabrics!

I have chopped 'em up and they are being mailed out tomorrow.

For my month, I'd like you to make a block inspired by these wall hangings:

Woven wall hanging by Eve Gulick - you can read a bit more about her here.

Please use this as the general idea and inspiration, but feel free to put your own spin on it as you see fit! I'd like for you to make a long rectangle – like one of the wall hangings in the photo.

How long you make it is up to you, but it should be 12 ½” wide. Please just make one block – I’d rather one longer rectangle than two shorter ones…

Please use the Kona Coal as the background fabric. Hopefully you have enough but if you don’t, I can add outside borders once I get the block back - just let me know where to add the Coal if needed.

Lastly, if you could stick to the fabrics I’ve sent that would be great.

August Blocks

For August, I am sending out a variety of blue kona solids, kona ash, kona white, and Liberty and AMH voile.

I would love for you to do a type of bento box block.

I have linked to Ashley's tutorial (http://www.filminthefridge.com/2009/06/24/quartered-squares-a-modified-bento-box-block-tutorial/) but this is for a guide only.

Please feel free to make any type of 'squares in squares' block (15.5" square) but just bear in mind that once they come back to me I will be cutting them into 4's and reassembling. No wonky please.

It's not at all what I had planned in my head, but my very first cut was a mistake and ruined all of my plans, so I did what you always advocate: I improvised! Overall, I'm pretty happy with how it came out. Can't wait to see how it looks in your final quilt!

I recently completed and sent Amanda's flying geese block. Now, I've swapped with Amanda before so I know I shouldn't have been surprised ... but dang, can this woman put together some amazing fabric combinations. When it comes to an eye for color and design, some people just have it. Amanda has it for sure.

Anyhow, once I finished ogling and fondling her selection of fabrics, I had to decide on a design. When it comes to flying geese, I really only know how to make one size -- 4.5" x 2.5" -- so that was a given. I have a "go to" brick-style block for when I want to make something simple but effective (see an example here), so I started there. I decided to use the little square spots to highlight some fussy cutting, and I was excited to use some of my new quilt market purchases (the Far Far Away 2 moons and a vintage feedsack print) in the block.

Hope you like it, Amanda ... I think your final quilt is going to be amazing.

There was an attempt at a second block but it was not a success... at all... so I'm throwing in a couple of random extra geese for you Amanda. Maybe for the back or something?

June is Almost Here!

I kept telling myself all during the month of May, June is my month, and low and behold it slipped up on me. I'm sorry I'm a bit late getting this out to you, but the packages will be in the mail first thing Tuesday morning. You'll be receiving three fabrics, one Ikea graphic print and two solids. One is a soft blue and the other is kona charcoal.

Instructions for the block:

Size: I'd like the blocks to be rectangular. You decide on the size, but I'd like you to go larger rather than smaller due to the scale of the print.

Use of stash: I'd like you to keep with the three fabrics I sent.

Thread: Something neutral is good.

General Theme: I'm leaving it up to you. I hope this isn't too open ended for everyone. I'd love the quilt to be modern, graphic and non traditional when it's done. Whatever you make will be great!

Embellishments: Not this time.

Number of blocks: One is great, if you want to do more, go for it!

Fabrics: If you have a significant amount of the print left, send it back. It's all I have and you never know what might show up on the back.

If you need more direction, let me know, but I think you all will create great blocks!

I was going to title this post "More Drunk Love for Ashley" but noticed that everyone else did!

Anyhow, here are my two blocks for Ashley ... made late Friday night and squeaking in right before the April 30th deadline.

These are my absolute favorite types of blocks to make -- great fabrics, no pattern, go with the flow. I hope you like them, Ashley! I can't wait to see your final quilt.

For May, my theme is flying geese. I'm sending you a quarter yard cut of Lemon Shot Cotton, an orange print, a brown print, and three various other light value prints. I'm including lots of Heather Ross' print, I have to use them up before the new collection arrives *wink*. The finished block size should be 12.5" square. If you have the time, Iwould be thrilled if you could make more than one block

The inspiration is this Nettie's wonderful quilt. I love all the triangles going in different directions but still feel united by the same background color.

For myself, I'm planning to make it the easy way using half square triangles method. And on the premier Fat Quarterly (which I'm sure a lot of you were a part of) there's a lot excellent inspirations for flying geese blocks. You could have your geese flying every which way you want.

You could add prints from your own stash, anything that you think would work with my selection. Feel free to keep any scraps you'd like to use, but otherwise please send them back to me.

Here are my two big blocks for Julie. The fabrics were beautiful and a lot of fun to work with. Of course, making improv blocks like this is always a fun way to spend some time!

As Ashley's already mentioned, that solid blue was such a nice (& different) texture to work with. I think it will be great in your final quilt.

These blocks finished out at about 14.5" and 15.5" (if I am remembering correctly -- they're already back home with you, I believe!)

Hope you like 'em! Can't wait to see your finished quilt. It should be magnificent!

I tried my hardest to get away from the square-in-square design, but I just kept coming back to it! It's one of my favorites, and even though many of you have made these blocks (either recently for another quilting bee, or for my month for Block Party), I hope you won't mind making some more!

Last time I went with a scrappy look, so this time I've selected a specific color palette of purple, gray and green. I don't typically use purple, so this will be a nice little change! Here's some more info...

What size quilt block do you want your bee partners to make? It would be great if you could make blocks that are 13.5"

Can your partners use any of his/her own stash fabric to use in your quilt block? If so, are there any limitations? I've selected all one-color fabrics for the greens, purples, and grays, with the exception of one multi-colored print. Please feel free to add fabrics that fit, but please do not add in any other prints with multiple colors.

Is there a specific color of thread (white/off white) you want your partners to sew with? Whatever you typically use!

Does your partners have to use at least a little bit of every fabric you send or can your partners decide? I've sent lots of fabric so you can feel free to decide which ones you want to use. I'm sending one multi-colored floral print and I'd love it if you'd include at least a small piece of it in each block.

Also, I added a white solid to some of the packages (please don't add white if I didn't send it to you). I'm not using sashing, so if I sent you white, feel free to use it for the outermost ring if you'd like.

Great colors Julie! I really love the texture on the blue solid, so I used a lot of it in this block. I realized after the fact that it's maybe not quite as wonky as you were looking for, but hopefully slightly wonky will work! :)

I'm swamped with work at the moment, so I only managed one... (maybe I'll send you some extra fabric to make up for only doing one!)

Wonky Improv...

I'm always a little freaked out when I have to make wonky blocks! It's all those angles and not being able to really 'map' out what I am going to make. Once I get into the flow of things though I start to enjoy the process a little more.

Julie requested wonky, improv blocks measuring anywhere between 14" - 16". These two blocks measure 14" square.

My blocks for Julie are done and dusted. The snappy turnaround is more in desperate need to keep my head above water rather than efficiency.

This is not my usual style of piecing and the call to "get wonky" was heard, but more often than not the ruler took charge to square things up a little.

I did enjoy stepping outside of my comfort zone and even found it liberating, piecing without plan or pre-conceived ideas.

In fact, give me "wonky" and "improvisational" before embroidery and applique anytime.

Thanks for the challenge Julie - love your choice of fabrics by the way - I hope you can use these blocks for your quilt.

I love your fabric choices John!

Here's my first one... I love the deer print, and my piece had almost a whole deer in it, so I cut him (or her!) out, framed it with some extra prints and my favorite green solid and then placed him back into the paint by number forest.

For the second block, I paired the floral Lush print with a piece of Flea Market Fancy and a bit of a solid. A simple one, but I really like how the gray medallions in the FMF print pick up the light blue background of the Lush print.

Can't wait to see your finished quilt!

My first block is made up of simple strips, examples of which were shown in John's inspiration mosaic.

In the second block I used some of my own Lush stash which I think ties in well with some of the other blocks that have popped up in our flickr group.

Thanks John! I loved your "Sky's the Limit" block request and I think I have been true to my own style:

I love modern fabrics combined with simple piecing and this block was such a joy to piece that I made another.

I have added some of my own solid fabric to this block which I think works well with the Lush fabrics. These blocks, as well as the leftover scraps, are making their way back across the Pacific Ocean.

Ryan's February Blocks For John

I made 3 blocks to send to John. Here's what I came up with:

The one block was a direct pull from his inspiration mosaic. Clean lines, clean breaks between the fabric changes. The other 2 were my interpretation of his theme. In one of the blocks I tried to mirror the color card feel of the one print by using raw edge applique to create a series of circles. I was so happy with the way that block came out that I decided to make another, this time placing a "J" in the center.

John said it was OK to pull fabrics from our stash to incorporate so I added some Dandelion in Stone from Patty Young's new Flora and Fauna line and made the "J" out of Denyse Schmidt's Canyon Stripe in New Day from her Hope Valley line. There's even some good size scraps left to send back with his blocks. Hope he likes em!

I knew this would be a fun month! I went pretty basic with my first house ... I love this basic shape and, of course, the fabrics and color combo is almost magical.

But of course, these blocks are like Lay's potato chips: you can't just stop at one. So I made another, and this time decided on a pair of skinny next-door neighbors with tall pointy roofs. I hope this adds something a little different to Kerri's village:

Another block for Kerri.

This is going to be a great quilt! I love the choice of fabrics, red and aqua are definitely a favorite color combination, and I have enjoyed playing with them.

I can't wait to see how this quilt comes together!

This is my block for Kerri. I had this block all planned out on paper. I was going to make a house with a whimsical crooked chimney. It get's cold outside during the winter months! All Gnome homes need a good working fireplace.

After I put the chimney on, my wife commented that it looked like a watering can spout. So I went with it! I'm still giggling over making this block Kerri! It was so much fun. I may need to start my own village soon!

i agree with nettie. these blocks are so cute and addicting. my red/aqua little house quilt left me as the prize for the joy challenge. i think i need a replacement.

I've got all my fabrics picked, and getting ready to send them asap. With most all my kiddos coming down with the flu, has made it so I'm running a tad behind. So sorry for the delay. Here is all the information about the block.

*** UPDATE*** What size quilt block do you want your bee partners to make? I would prefer 15 1/2 inch square instead of the 12 1/2 inch blocks so everyone has more room for creativity.

Can your partners use any of her own stash fabric to use in your quilt block? If so, are there any limitations? Yes, as long as they are red and aqua. :)

Is there a specific color of thread (white/off white) you want your partners to sew with? Which ever you prefer

Does your partners have to use at least a little bit of every fabric you send or can your partners decide? Please feel free to decide

Do you have a general theme or is it up to your partners to decide? Are there any specific themes that you do NOT want in your quilt block? Likes/dislikes?. I'm asking for little houses, and the background I'll be sending is Kona snow. I prefer there to not be any grass, but there won't be green in the packages.

Will you allow any embellishments on the quilt block (i.e. embroidery, raised items such as yo-yos or fabric origami)? I prefer not so I can freely quilt it.

If your partners are super motivated and are able to make two blocks out of the fabric you send, would you accept more than one block from your partners? Sure! :)

Do you want your partners to return any leftover larger size scraps to you when they return the completed blocks or can they keep them for their own scrap stash? Please feel free to keep any scraps.
